Reworking Helvetica Poster...
Brainstorming: 2 hrs.
I've decided to do this one on actual sheet metal. I'll be purchasing that this week.

Papyrus Poster...
Brainstorming for Materials: 2 hrs.
I am going to try the same concept I did for the first Helvetica poster, with the frisket and matte medium, this time, I'll mix as much "random particles" in with it to give the feel of vomit.

Interstate Poster...
Brainstorming: 1 hr.
I'm still not sure how to do this one. I may substitute it with another type face. I've been stuck on this once since the beginning, hence the reason for putting it off so long.

I hate to say it, but I didn't work on my posters at all this week. I can't even really log anything more than an hour because I got nothing accomplished. This week will be better, as far as being able to work on my pieces, so I'm not going to stress over not getting anything done, but I am disappointed in myself to say the least.

Time Log #7:

Sunday, October 11, 2009

Despite my efforts to make this week a week of high volume hours, I failed at that attempt, partly because of fall break. I do, however, know for sure where I am headed. So, I will restate my artist statement for this body of work.

I will explore typographically, the creation and design of posters, in a series, both in texture and content. I will convey the feeling and use of well-known typefaces by using the text, medium, texture, and background content. I plan on making at least eight posters in all, possibly more. Each will have its own character and feeling. Being cohesive is not necessarily the direction I want, but rather exploring each typeface's individuality and what it communicates to viewers. The only constant element will be the size of the posters.

Because I realized that too many restraints on me, creatively, bores me, I've opened myself up to more possibilities. I think this will help me explore more of what I enjoy working with, as well as teach me more to enjoy having no constraints and the ability to do "my work".

Brainstorming for "boring drawings" project: 1 hr.

Process:
Arranging drawings on paper: 15 min.
Applying matte medium: 15 min.
Painting with acrylic ink: 15 min.

Brainstorming for posters: 1.5 hrs.

Computer work for posters: 1 hr.

TOTAL: 4.25

Time Log#6:

It's frustrating that I'm finally into what I'm creating, yet my money is tight, so creatively, I'm haulted until I get my allowance. It sounds horrible, but as far as right now, I'm stuck to brainstorming or creating something with items that can solely be purchase in the bookstore. Sadly, I'm on a spray paint kick right now, so all i want to do is experiment with matte medium with spray paint overlay, like I did with my first poster in my series. Hopefully I'll get that monthly allowance this week...if not, I'll be waiting until the 15th to be paid for work/study. That would be depressing. I'd have to think outside the box for real then. Despite that, I actually logged a lot of hours this week, now that I'm on a roll. I surprised myself at how much I worked!

Brainstorming for first poster (talking to Prof. Speaker, researching Helvetica, thinking of slogans): 2 hrs.

Process...
Photoshop work: 30 min.
Projecting/tracing onto poster: 45 min.
Masking letters: 1 hr.
Applying matte medium: 30 min.
Removing masking: 1.5 hrs.

Brainstorming for next poster in the series: 45 min.

Brainstorming for "old daily drawings": 1 hr. (still thinking about this one)

TOTAL: 8 hrs.

Update:

Wednesday, September 30, 2009

I finished my first poster in my series of typographic posters today. All-in-all, I'm pleased with it. I would have liked for the type to be a little more crisp than it came out, but the rough effect that the liquid frisket made on the lines actually goes better with the overall feel of it. Conceptually, I achieved what I wanted to, in conveying that Helvetica is one of the few typefaces that though overused, is still widely used and recognized. It has lasted many different eras in graphic design and continues to, because of it's even and balanced strokes and characters. It was built to last, hence "Built to Last" on the poster. It looks so nice photographed. I was pleasantly surprised! I'm actually enjoying this process now and am definitely happy to move on with this series and leave the daily drawings behind. I'm still contemplating what to do with those.

Reconceptualized!

I'm so excited to get started on my new choice of direction for this semester of work! I've already got an idea forming in my head and I can see the outcome! I'll hopefully have enough time tomorrow to get started. I just need to find a medium that can create a texture and some metallic spray paint...well, for my first poster of the series at least. Let the fun begin!

Time Log #5:

Decision to rethink entire body of work: 30 min.

Brainstorming for new ideas: 2 hrs.

TOTAL: 2.5 hrs.

I honestly didn't have a chance this week to decide on a new idea, but chances are, I will have an idea by class time. I'm frustrated with this process of figuring out what I want to do a body of work on. I want it to be phenomenal work, but deciding to start over again discourages me because I usually know exactly what I want to create. The openendedness of it all seems to be the biggest issue. Rules help me, so learning how to deal with complete freedom is my biggest issue.

Time Log #4:

Execution for 3 Month Drawing Project:
-drawing:

Sept 14 (30 min.)
Sept 15 (30 min.)
Sept 16 (30 min.)
Sept 17 (30 min.)
Sept 18 (45 min.)
Sept 19 (30 min.)
Sept 20 (45 min.)

TOTAL: 4 hr.

I'm thinking of finding another process for next month, with the same size paper as September, however, this process doesn't require enough of my time every day, which is proving difficult to get into or to come up with interesting solutions every day.
